Potatoes

As one of worlds most experienced producers of food processing equipment, FINIS is continuously on the move with producing and developing technically perfect, environment friendly and energy saving potato processing systems. These systems can peel, cut and/or profile potatoes and are built up from several machines which each contribute their own part. This makes it possible for us to comply with your wishes regarding capacity and final product.

Potato peeling
Finis had developed several different systems, each with their own unique characteristics.

  • Carborundum peeling
  • Knife peeling
  • Combi peeling
  • FAS integrated potato processing

    Carborundum peeler
The Finis roller peeler, as a part of the complete line, is able to peel different products and quantities.
As a pre-treatment on the knife
peeling stage the roller peeler takes care of an optimal final product with the right quality.
The peeling result depends on the chosen grit, the speed of the rolls and the time the product remains in the machine.

    Knife peeling
Extending the quality period of the peeled product can be realised with the specially developed FINIS knife peeling system as final stage in the line.
The special positioning of the rotating knife peeling discs assures that the product keeps it's natural shape. The adjustment of the machine makes sure that all kinds of products can be peeled into a smooth final product.
Results being less sensible for bacteriological pollution.

    Continuous knife peeler
The food processing industry’s demand for a versatile peeling machine that produces peeled product with a longer shelf life without the use of chemicals has led to the development of the Finis Continuous Knife Peeler.
The complete peeling process including pre-peeling takes place without water. Beside that the continuous system ensures of a high capacity with a maximum yield.
The standard capacity of the continuous peeling machine ranges from 500 to 5,000 kg/hour, depending on the product to be peeled. Other capacities can be delivered on request.

    FAS
In a complete line following process steps are integrated in one system:

    • A new vision system sorting the potatoes on length and width ensures the potatoes to the correct sorting lane in the machine.
    • A system that feeds the potatoes individually to the “pick and place” system.
    • A “pick and place” system that picks up the potatoes and puts them in the correct position on the holders of the peeling machine.
    • A new peeling machine, based on the thin knife peeling principle, that peels every potato individually.
    • An integrated halving and quartering system that can half or quarter every individual potato according to the sorting-size of the product.
    • Bacteriological very high quality.
    • Large purchase-flexibility with regard to raw material.

    •

    Advantages that are achieved:

    • The shelf life of the fresh product can be prolonged with 3 till 5 days.
    • A complete peeling line, including accurate halving or quartering, integrated in one machine.
    • Dry solid waste, only lose skin.
    • No use of water during peeling and as such no waste water.

    Potato cutting
The demand for cut potato products has existed for many years. The primary interest is the end products that, when prepared in the kitchen, require an equal cooking time. To achieve an equal cooking time there must not be much size variation. To maximize yield and lower costs, processing companies prefer to peel small potatoes as well as large ones. All of these factors have resulted in the development of several precision cutting machines to cut, each with there own characteristics on capacity and the technology to cut the potato.

    We offer three different machines:

  • FH
  • : Halving \ quartering
  • FV
  • : Quartering
  • FCHV
  • : Vision controlled cutting

    FH: Halving \ quartering
The FH is the most common machine for high speed, high volume potatoes cutting. Improved alignment and a unique solution for more accurate cutting with minimal breakage resulted in a machine that is ideal for a variety of potato applications. Optional features include a set-up for quartering and sorting device.

    FV: Quartering
Up till now the halving of potatoes was not a problem. Already for a long time Finis supplies a halving machine (The FH). In these machine the potatoes are fed, positioned and cut in a continuous process.

However, when quartering was carried out on the same system the big problem was that the way of cutting created irregular parts. This was the main reason for Finis to develop a completely new system of individual feeding, positioning and cutting of the potatoes in a non-continuous process.

The potatoes are individually transported to the cutting unit. Feeding is done by means of an exactly controllable shaker. A single-track station takes care of the final step before positioning.

Each potato is individually positioned before cutting. After positioning the potato is held and cut. This method creates an end-product with a much better similarity.

    FCHV: Vision controlled cutting
Good, better, best: With the FCHV Finis has introduced a revolutionary new way to cut potatoes. Potatoes are individually positioned on a belt and a vision system is used to detect and analyse the potato. Intelligent software determines whether the potato has the required shape and dimensions to be processed. If so, the position and the orientation of the cut are calculated (halving / quartering). A pneumatic system positions the knives, which in the next step cuts the potato on the fly. Potatoes which did not meet the required specifications are sorted out.

This high volume cutting machines cuts up to 40.000 potatoes per hour with maximum flexibility and unbelievable accuracy. Besides halving and quartering many other ways of cutting, like f.e. cutting a specific shape, are possible.

    Potato profiling
Finis has introduced the profiling of potatoes for industrial food processors in the early nineties. Profiling is used to reshape a small potato or potato cube to get a high end potato product. Small potatoes are usually converted into perfect round balls. Bigger potatoes are first cut into cubes and afterwards rounded with the profiling machine, this to maintain maximum yield.

To obtain a higher capacity, the product needs to be pre-peeled. It is also recommendable to bring a more or less graded input into the machine. The specially shaped carborundum and aluminium rollers -opposite from each other in sets of two - transform the product to an equally sized end product. This takes place without the use of water.

Besides potatoes the machine can also process carrots, red beets, celery and others. Also fruit - possibly slightly frozen - can be processed. Should the natural shape not be suitable for profiling, it is possible to pre-cut the product. For example carrots into small pieces and celery into cubes.

The free space in the rollers determines the size of the end product. Standard used diameters are the odd numbers from 21 -35 mm. (Other sizes available on request). One set of rollers produces one diameter. By exchanging the rollers, different sizes per machine are made possible. As an option the machine can be provided with a cassette system. Instead of removing the rollers one by one, the complete unit including rollers can be exchanged.
